PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a face authentication apparatus for detecting an inappropriate lighting environment caused by a human factor to always stably authenticate a face of a moving person. SOLUTION: The face authentication apparatus identifies whether a pedestrian is already registered by collating a face image acquired from the pedestrian to be authenticated with dictionary information registered in advance. The apparatus sets detection areas for each of a plurality of images acquired from the pedestrian, detects an abnormal luminance in each image for the set plurality of detection areas, and determines whether the current environment is appropriate for the face authentication by integrating each of the detection results.
