PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus where, when occurrence of abnormality in a synchronizing signal is detected, generation of the synchronizing signal can be automatically recovered. SOLUTION: The optical writing device comprises: a plurality of light sources (8, 9); a light source controlling means (206) controlling the light sources (8, 9) and emitting light from the light sources (8, 9) at prescribed timing; and light scanning means (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) deflecting and scanning the light emitted from the light sources (8, 9) and writing the light in an image carrier; and a synchronizing signal generating means (7) generating a synchronizing signal when the light is detected. When the occurrence of abnormality in the synchronizing signal is detected, the timing at which the light is emitted from the light sources (8, 9) is reset, and the generation of the synchronizing signal is recovered.
