PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To streamline a sewing process without having a thread cutter interfere the sewing process when the thread cutter is not used. SOLUTION: A sewing machine is provided with a thread cutter 30 equipped with a moving blade 31 on which a thread holding section 31a is formed and a fixed blade 33 that slidably abuts on the thread holding section 31a of the moving blade 31 and which moves forward and backward between a position where the moving blade 31 holds the topping thread 16 by the thread holding section 31a and the slidably abutting position with the fixed blade 33 to cut a topping thread 16 that is held by the moving blade 31 by slidably abutting both blades 31, 33, and an evacuating mechanism 37 which keeps the thread cutter 30 in a movable manner between a cutting position and an evacuating position. The evacuating mechanism 37 is provided with a turning shaft 40 that is turnable around its vertical direction as a shaft and a bearing 41 which pivotally supports the turning shaft 40 in a rotatable manner and is fixed on a sewing machine frame 2, and moves the thread cutter 30 between the cutting position and the evacuating position by holding the thread cutter 30 by the turning shaft 40 and turning the thread cutter 30 along with the turn of the turning shaft 40.
