914,496. Handling devices for use in nuclear reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. May 24, 1960 [May 30, 1959; March 18, 1960], No. 18283/60. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXII] A device for removing samples of graphite from the core of a nuclear reactor consists of an elongated frame capable of being introduced into and orientated within a duct in the reactor, a cutter 26 carried by the frame and driven by a motor outside the duct, means for feeding the cutter in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the frame, and means for breaking the sample from the wall of the duct after cutting. The cutter 26 which is rotated from the motor through belt and pulley 22, 23 and gearing 15, 18, 19 is an end cut milling cutter having an internal cavity 32. The forward feeding device is provided with ramps 33 which engage the lugs 28 on the tool carrier. Continuous pressure is exerted longitudinally along the ramp to feed the cutting tool along its axis into the graphite. When the cutter has completely penetrated the graphite, the core sample is broken off, by tilting the cutter, and is retained inside the cavity 32. Gas cooling of the cutter is provided.
|
