<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To add value to a product by allowing the product to exhibit an optical response to a near-field light region in addition to an optical response to a propagation light region. <P>SOLUTION: A recording medium includes: a first scale 11 where the shape or physical property of the medium is modified in a pitch equal to or over the diffraction limit with respect to the wavelength of propagation light irradiating the medium; and a second scale 12 where the shape or physical properties of the medium are modified by a unit of a read region corresponding to the exudation spot of near-field light, having a diameter less than the diffraction limit with respect to the wavelength of the propagation light. When the medium is irradiated with propagation light, only the first scale 11 exhibits the optical response, and when near-field light is exuded, only the second scale 12 exhibits the optical response. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
