PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simplified and/or improved method for guaranteeing reliable identification display, and provide a device for responding to detection and identification of a signal, double, or multiple pulse state in soliton mode ultrashort pulse laser having optimized design and the desired number of components in regards to increased robustness, and compactness. SOLUTION: A detection method of an undesired double or multiple pulse state in an ultrashort pulse laser system which is operated in a soliton regime and generates femtosecond or picosecond pulses, includes a laser medium for amplification which produces laser emission, a laser resonator having at least one resonator mirror, and a pump source. A first signal μ in proportion to pulse power p(t) or pulse energy averaged over a resonator cycle is measured for the laser emission. A second signal υ in proportion to a square of the pulse power P(t) averaged over the resonator cycle is measured for the laser emission. Occurrence of the double or multiple pulse state is detected based on comparison of the measurement signals μ and υ. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
