Terpolymers are prepared by heating together at from 80 DEG to 250 DEG C. at autogenous pressure a mixture of (a) 1 to 30% of allyl or methallyl alcohol or mixture thereof, (b) 30 to 90% of styrene, nuclear alkylated or halogenated styrene, or a nuclear halogenated and alkylated styrene, or a mixture thereof, and (c) 1 to 40% of an a ,b -olefinic dicarboxylic acid with four or five carbon atoms in the molecule, or an anhydride thereof, or a half ester thereof with an aliphatic alcohol, glycol, or polyol having one to 10 carbon atoms in the molecule. Vinyl toluene, vinyl ethylbenzene or butylbenzene, 2,3- and 2,4-dimethyl, styrene, 2,3- and 2,4-diethylstyrene, and 2-methyl-4-chlorostyrene, and maleic, fumaric, citraconic, mesaconic and itaconic acids with esterifying alcohols such as ethanol, isobutanol, n-decanol, ethylene glycol or glycerol, are mentioned. In a modification a quantity of allyl or methallyl alcohol or a mixture thereof is first heated and the mixture of monomers (a), (b) and (c) added continuously at a rate so as to continuously polymerize the mixture under isothermal conditions. A solvent may be used with a catalyst such as hydrogen, benzoyl, pinacolone, di-t-butyl peroxides, t-butyl perbenzoate, or t-butyl, and cumene hydroperoxides, and air, oxygen, ozonides, ozo compounds or high energy radiations. The products with from 1 to 15% of olefinic dicarboxylic acid are thermoplastic and may be plasticized, e.g. with stearic acid for use as adhesives or moulding compounds, or used with other cross-linking thermosetting resins, such as melamine, urea, or phenolaldehyde, and isocyanate or polyisocyanate resins, plasticizers and solvents such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, xylene, xylene-butanol mixtures and aliphatic alcohols as surface-coating resins. Surface-coating resins may also be prepared by esterifying terpolymer with from 15 to 40% of olefinic dicarboxylic acid with a drying oil fatty acid such as those obtained from cottonseed, tall, soybean, linseed, dehydrated castor or safflower oil, together with if desired driers, e.g. cobalt naphthenate, pigments, fillers, plasticizers and stabilizers, in order form surface-coating based on the thermosetting resins.
