<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting device which is reduced in thickness and can emit light forward efficiently, and a light-emitting unit equipped with the light-emitting device. <P>SOLUTION: The light-emitting device includes a package having an almost oblong light-emitting face having a recession, a back face opposite to the light-emitting face, and first and second side faces almost perpendicular to the light-emitting face and the back face and connected to the light-emitting face and the back face via long sides, and a light-emitting element disposed in the recession. The first side face has first and second feed electrode faces connected to the light-emitting element, and a mount face disposed between the first and second feed electrode faces. A level difference is formed between the first feed electrode face and the mount face and between the second feed electrode face and the mount face. The first and second feed electrode faces are retreated deeper than the mount face adjacent thereto.
