<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device and display unit which can be managed easily, and safely offer high visual effects. <P>SOLUTION: The display unit 1 includes the display device 10 placed on a road 2, and a convex laid rubber 30. The display device 10 is composed of an elastic display member 11, a lift device 12 which moves up and down the display member 11, a frame box 13 (13A, 13B), and a control box 14. The lift device 12 and the frame box 13 are housed in a recession 3 formed on the road 2. The display device 10 is capable of automatically switching to a housed state in which the display member 11 is housed in the recession 3 and to a display state in which the display member 11 projects out of the road 2. Because the display member 11 is elastic and is so mounted as to be bendable relative to the lift device 12, the display member 11 is hardly damaged even if hit by a vehicle.
