PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a fluoropolymer for obtaining an aqueous fluoropolymer dispersion having good dispersion stability. SOLUTION: The method for producing a fluoropolymer includes polymerizing a fluoromonomer in an aqueous medium in the presence of a compound (I) represented by the general formula (1): Rf<SP>1</SP>O(Rf<SP>2</SP>O)P(O)OM, wherein Rf<SP>1</SP>and Rf<SP>2</SP>are different from each other and each a 3-4C fluoroalkyl group, and M represents H, Na or NH<SB>4</SB>.
