PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actualize the arrangement of bearings for further improving service life and allowing relatively easy and safe adjustment. SOLUTION: This invention relates to a bearing assembly for a shaft and an industrial gear unit 30 having the bearing assembly. The bearing assembly 34 has two conical roller bearings mounted on the shaft 35 in axially spaced relation. The bearings are oriented in such O-shaped arrangement that the diameter of each roller is increased in the direction of leaving the other paired bearing. In a gear unit 30, the outer cup of each conical roller bearing can be positioned by an abutment shoulder portion 32 of a housing 11 while the inner cone of the conical roller can be positioned by a fixing nut 40 arranged at the screwed end of the shaft 35 or a retainer ring 61 arranged in an annular groove of the shaft 35.
