PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stainless steel sheet exhibiting a fine surface, upon the production of an austenitic stainless steel sheet, by remarkably reducing the unevenness of luster and a scab defect generated on the surface of the steel sheet. SOLUTION: A steel slab is subjected to carburization refining in a decarbonization refining furnace, is then subjected to reduction refining, is thereafter subjected to reduction deoxidation treatment by secondary refining equipment, and, before or after the secondary refining, sulfur or sulfur-containing substance is added, thus the ratio between a sulfur content [S] and a solid solution oxygen content [O]<SB>f</SB>in the molten steel is controlled so as to satisfy the range of inequality: 1.5≤[S]/[O]<SB>f</SB>≤4.0 ([S]: unit mass%, and [O]<SB>f</SB>: unit mass%).
