摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst which uses a small amount of the expensive noble metals Pt and Ru and has a high activity and high stability suitable for fuel cells, its manufacturing method, and a composite membrane electrode and a fuel cell using it. <P>SOLUTION: The catalyst comprises a conductive support and catalyst particles supported by the conductive support and having a composition of formula (1): Pt<SB>u</SB>Ru<SB>x</SB>Mg<SB>y</SB>T<SB>z</SB>(wherein, u is 30-60 atm%; x is 20-50 atm%; y is 0.5-20 atm%; z is 0.5-40 atm%; element T is one or more elements selected from a group of Si, W, Mo, V, Ta and Cr, and their combination). The amount of the element T having oxygen bond, in the spectrum of the catalyst particles measured by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), is 4 times the amount of the element T having metallic bond or lower. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT</p>
