Bolster material (23, figure 2) is wrapped around an applicator 11A for transfer to the jaws of a surgical stapler. Either the applicator or the bolster incorporates a weakened portion that facilitates release of the bolster from the applicator. The applicator may have a nose 22 and a weakened portion 32 at the base of the nose. A strip of bolster having an aperture at either end can be secured by passing the nose through the apertures. The bolster is released by breaking off the nose along the weakened portion. Alternatively, a closed loop of bolster (figure 36) may have a line of perforations (183, figure 38B) along which it is easily broken to release it from the applicator. Also disclosed are wings on the applicator to facilitate grasping, and a dried, reversible adhesive coating for securing the bolster to the arm of a stapler. |
