A composition for use as a self-sustaining film or as a layer on a support consists of a film-forming resinous binder, at least one aryl amine and at least one halogen-containing compound which releases a free radical of halogen on exposure to light, the free radical immediately reacting with aryl amine in its vicinity to produce a colour. Additionally stabilizers such as amines of more basic nature, zinc oxide and phenol derivatives, and photosensitizers such as yellow to red aryl amines may be present in the composition. Tables are provided exemplifying I the binders and solvents therefor, II amines and the colours produced therewith using CCl 4 , CBr 4 and CH1 3 as halogen-containing compounds, III and IV these and other halogen compounds for operation without and with addition of basic stabilizers, and V preferred ranges of the several materials. Details are specified in eleven examples all of which describe heat treatment after exposure; and a twelth, comparison, example showing no colour froduction in absence of the halogen; thus in Example 1 a glass plate is coated with a solution containing polystyrene, diphenylamine and 1,2,3,4 - tetrachlorotetrahydronaphthalene as operative ingredients and this is exposed for 25 seconds at 10 inches from a sun lamp to show a purple black colour after placing in an oven at 80‹ C. for 2 minutes.
