发明名称 Data storage and selection apparatus
摘要 918,581. Record card apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 9, 1960 [Feb. 9, 1959], No. 4491/60. Class 106 (1). A data store consists of a large number of magnetic records in a container and a selector adapted to pick a desired record from the container, to pass it on a drum past a read-write head and to return it to the container. The container consists of ten bins 12, Fig. 1, each movable to position any one of ten cells under the path of movement of the selector 21. Each cell, Fig. 2, has ten sub-cells 14 separated by partitions 17 and each sub-cell contains ten record strips 10 which lie parallel to the motion of the bins 12. Each record has an ear 18, the ears of the ten records in a sub-cell being staggered across the width of the cell. The desired record is selected by positioning the selector 21 in such a position that a pair of pusher arms 52, Figs. 3a and 4, are aligned with the ears of records on either side of the desired one. A gripper 23, Fig. 3, attached to the drum 22, Fig. 4, by links 32 is adapted to force the arms to the spreading position when the drum is turned backwards from the position of Fig. 4 to that of Fig. 4a. The desired record 10s is left standing in the middle as shown in Fig. 3a and is embraced by the gripper and engaged by a comb-like latch member 37 having teeth, one of which engages the opening 39 in the ear. When the record has been gripped, rotation of the drum carries it under a readwrite head unit having thirty-five heads assembled in five groups of seven. The record has seventy tracks and since each character requires seven bits, there are ten character tracks. Alternate tracks across the record are sensed by the five groups of heads and the whole read-write unit can be displaced to another position so as to co-operate with the other five tracks. The arms 52, latch to keep the records spread so that on reverse rotation of the drum the record returns to its initial position. The gripper is released by operation of a bar 41. A character track is specified by an address and means are provided responsive to an address to displace the selected bin to bring the selected cell under the path of the selector, to position the selector over the selected cell and over the selected sub-cell, to move the arms 52 along square guides 53 into alignment with the ears of records on either side of the desired record, to displace the read-write unit to the appropriate one of its two positions so that a group of heads is aligned with the desired character track and through a switching matrix to connect this group to input or output circuits. As the record is carried on the drum under the readwrite unit 24, it is aligned by being pressed axially by spring arms at one side of the cylinder against a flange at the other side. There may be more than one selector 21 and one of them may face the other way so as to be able to read or record on the other face of the record. Sorting.-The record may be returned to another position in the magazine, so that some sorting operation may be performed. Specifications 879,845 and 918,582 are referred to.
