A printing device and a printing control method are provided to detect the rotation cycle of a transfer belt while performing the printing preparation operation and perform printing simultaneously with the completion of the printing preparation operation, thereby reducing the initial print time. A detection unit(110) detects the rotation cycle of a transfer belt. A printing controller performs the printing preparation operation, detects the rotation cycle if the printing preparation operation starts, and performs printing by the detected rotation cycle if the printing preparation operation is completed. The detection unit comprises the followings. A sensing unit senses an identification mark formed on the transfer belt. A calculating unit calculates a rotation period of the transfer belt by performing a counting process from a point of time when the identification mark is sensed to a point of time when the identification mark is re-sensed.
