A method of forming a membrane including a polymer and another component, for use in an electrochemical cell, comprises: polymerising a monomer, preferably prepared from 30g AMPSA (2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulphonic acid); 30g HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) grade water; 2g allyl methacrylate; 75g acrylonitrile; 75g vinylpyrrolidone; 3g 2-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenyl-1-propanone and another component which is reactive with the monomer or the polymer. The component is encapsulated during polymerisation, and the encapsulant, which can be selected from a hollow solid particle, glass, water, acrylonitrile, plastic, polyethylene redox initiator, such as iodide or tri-iodide, or catalyst for the polymerisation, does not substantially degrade during the polymerisation. The component is released from the encapsulant after polymerisation by diffusion, mechanical means or irradiation. |
