Bolster material (23, figure 2) is wrapped around an applicator 31 for transfer to the jaws of a surgical stapler. The bolster material is dried, remodelable extracellular matrix, preferably porcine small intestinal submucosa or pericardium. It may be secured to the applicator by adhesive, by a close fit or by passing through an aperture in the applicator. The adhesive may be of the dried, reversible variety, containing a water activated substance such as polyvinyl pyrrolidones, dextrans, carobxymethyl cellulose or hyaluronic acid. The applicator may have a nose 12 and lateral wings 14 which facilitate grasping of the applicator and act to maintain the bolster material in tension when it is looped over the nose. Both the adhesive and the bolster material may be lyophilised. |
