A seal 22 between a rotatable shaft 16 and a housing 12, Fig. 2, comprises a floating nylon ring 50 which engages an annular seat 53 provided in the housing at one end of a recess through which the shaft extends, and' which is drivingly connected to the shaft by means of a pin 54 extending through the shaft and through a slot 54a in the ring and, by means of a compression-spring 56, to a ring 58, e.g. of leaded bronze, which is sealed to the shaft 16, e.g. by O-rings 65, and which is urged by the spring into engagement with an annular seat 60 at the other end of the recess. The seat 60 is formed on a ring 61 sealed to the housing by an O-ring 64 and held in the recess by a snap-ring 66. The spring 56 is supported on caps 55, 57, respectively engaging the rings 50, 58. As shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 16 carries first and second stage rotary gear pumps 17, 18 of an oil burner pump. The pump 17 transfers oil from a supply tank to a reservoir 13 incorporated in the housing 12 and fitted with a cylindrical screen 14. The pump 18 delivers oil from the reservoir 13 to a pressure-control valve 32 connected to the burner port 33. The discharge port of the pump 17 may be connected to the reservoir 13 or to the supply tank by altering the position of a plug 27 in a port 26. When excess pressure develops at the burner, the oil is by-passed through the valve 32 to a pipe 43 connected to the port 26. A drain line 67 connects the housing recess to the pipe 43.
