A linear free-piston Stirling cycle machine has a linear alternator or linear motor with its stator 230 mounted on a spring 250 to provide an improved vibration balancing system. The spring 250 attaches the stator 230 to the interior of the casing 238 to provide an oscillating system permitting the stator 230 to reciprocate and flex the spring 250 during operation of the Stirling machine. The natural frequency of the stator 230 is maintained essentially equal to the operating frequency. For applications in which variations of the average temperature and/or the average pressure of the working gas cause substantial variations of the piston resonant frequency, means for compensating for those changes by varying the stator spring characteristics are also disclosed. |
