<p>In the chlorination of a titaniferous material in the presence of carbon in a fluidized bed of the kind described in Specification 762,583, a titaniferous slag is employed which contains not more than 5% Al2O3, 0,5% Ca, 7,0% MgO and 3,0% SiO2 respectively. Carbon in the form of coke may constitute 10-30% of the mixture which preferably is from 124 to 353 microns in size. The chlorination temperature may be from 1000 DEG to 1200 DEG C. and the fluidizing gas velocity is preferably 7-20 times the minimum. A quantity of slag and carbon corresponding to 11 times the weight of the initial bed may be chlorinated in continuous operation before sticking or impurity accumulation necessitate purging.</p> |
