A solid high molecular weight polymer containing nitrogen is brought into direct contact with anhydrous gaseous formaldehyde. The nitrogen containing polymer may be in granular or porous form. Polyamides, polyurea and polyurethanes are preferred as polymers, they may be used in a powdered state and may be prepared by adding non-solvent to a solution of the polymer or by cooling an alcoholic solution thereof. Other specified polymers are polypeptides, melamine-formaldehyde, polyaddition polymers of bis-lactam and diamine, addition polymers of acrylamide, polyvinyl pyridine, polyvinyl pyrolidone, and polyacrylonitrile.
