A rack and pinion type steering apparatus (1) comprises a housing (3) having a cylindrical holding hole (2) therein, a pinion (6) so disposed in the housing (3) as to be rotatably in the direction (R) around the axis (O) with bearings (4) and (5) interposed therebetween, a rack bar (8) having rack teeth (7) to be meshed with the pinion (6) and movable in the direction (A), a rack guide (9) which is so disposed in the holding hole (2) in the housing (3) so as to be movable in the direction (C) and which guides and supports the rack bar (8) so that the bar (8) is movable in the direction (A), and a coiled spring (10) for elastically pressing the rack teeth (7) of the rack bar (8) onto the pinion (6) with the rack guide (9) interposed therebetween. |
