Co-polyamides are made by reacting e -caprolactam or e -aminocaptroic acid in the absence of oxygen with 4-(amino-methyl) benzoic acid or an amide forming derivative thereof. Specified derivatives of 4-(aminomethyl) benzoic acid are the ethyl ester thereof, 4-(formylaminomethyl) benzoic acid or 4-(aminomethyl) benzonitrile. The process may be continuous or discontinuous and may be carried out in solvents, e.g. phenol, xylenol or cresol. The examples describe the preparation of co-polyamides from (1) and (3) 4-(aminomethyl) benzoic acid and e -caprolactam; (2) 4-(aminomethyl) benzoic acid and e -aminocaproic acid; (4) 4-(aminomethyl) benzoic acid nitrile and e -caprolactam; and (5) the ethyl ester of 4-(aminomethyl) benzoic acid. The products may be extruded into the form of monofilaments or converted into injection mouldings. |
