An apparatus and method for recording the waveform in the electric power system are provided to use the volatile memory of the small capacity by compressing the differential digital data by the run length encoding mode as data or the period unit. An waveform record apparatus(100) comprises a receive signal processor(110), the A/D converter(120), a microprocessor(130) and a nonvolatile memory(140). The received signal processor processes the oscillation waveform generated in the electric power system as signal. The A/D converter samples the signal of the nth cycle of the oscillation waveform to the predetermined sampling frequency. The A/D converter converts the sampled signal into the digital data. The microprocessor performs the differential between the data sampled in the same point of view among the digital data of the nth cycle and the digital data of n-1 cycle. The microprocessor compresses the differentiated digital data of the nth cycle by the run length encoding mode. The compressed digital data are stored in the nonvolatile memory.
