PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve performance as a camera utilizing an area outside of a performance guarantee range depending on photographing conditions and special application by providing a variable range wider than a range (the performance guarantee range) used in normal photographing in regard to a variable range of an aperture, a focal distance, a focal position, etc. SOLUTION: A maximum aperture and a minimum aperture are specified with regard to an iris aperture 26 to guarantee predetermined optical performance in an optical unit 24 including a photographing lens 12 and the iris aperture 26. In normal photographing, the aperture within the normal photographing aperture range from the maximum aperture to the minimum aperture is used. Apertures outside of the specifications (extra-open apertures or extra-small apertures) larger than the maximum aperture or smaller than the minimum aperture are prepared outside of the performance guarantee, and an aperture mechanism is controlled to use the aperture position outside of the specifications according to the selected photographing mode.
