PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide carbon black having a high specific surface area and produceable in high yield by using an animal or plant oil as a raw material oil, and to provide a method for producing the carbon black. SOLUTION: The carbon black is produced by using a raw material oil containing an animal or plant oil, or a modified product thereof. The raw material oil has≥100 BMCI value calculated from the average boiling point T (°C) and the specific gravity D (60/60°F) compared with water at 60°F by the formula: BMCI=48640/(T+273)+473.7*D-456.8,≥0.95 specific gravity D (60/60°F) and≥50 wt.% carbon content.
