PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably and stably recognize an obstacle by an easy method through simple processing of photographic images. SOLUTION: The photographic images for nearly the same road surface areas photographed by a photographing means 3 of one's own traveling vehicle 1 from a plurality of different directions are acquired by an image acquisition means, a prescribed monitoring range included in the photographic image from each the direction is extracted and identified by an identification means of an image processing means 4, and the obstacle perpendicular to a road surface in front of or in the rear of the own vehicle 1 is stably and certainly recognized by a recognition means of the image processing means 4 by simple difference detection of the images without performing complicated image processing or the like based on an identification result.
