PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable information terminal and a position calculation method that dispense with mounting a new device on an own vehicle, dispenses with complex operation, can grasp the parking position of an own vehicle, and can specify a get-in location and a get-off location when a user utilizes an electric train, a bus, a taxi, or the like. SOLUTION: The portable information terminal has: a GPS positioning means for performing the absolute positioning of the current position of a user; a means for counting users' steps; a clocking means for acquiring time information; a user state identification means for obtaining the traveling speed of a user from the position information positioned by the GPS positioning means and the time information acquired by the clocking means, and identifying whether the user is running or walking by a traveling means, based on the number of user's steps measured by the traveling speed and the means for measuring the number of steps; and a position calculation means for calculating the parking position of the traveling means and the utilization position of the traveling means, based on the identification results by the user state identification means.
