PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve image quality by keeping beam diameter uniform even when the beam diameter varies only in a main scanning direction or only in a subscanning direction in one line in the main scanning direction on a face to be scanned due to the variation in the type of a used deflector, a scanning optical system or a designing error of the apparatus, or the like. SOLUTION: The luminous flux width of an incident laser light is regulated, for example, only in the subscanning direction with a light shielding member in a luminous flux regulation element. Then, in a liquid lens, the luminous flux width of the laser light passing through the open part of a light transmissive liquid is varied in one line in the main scanning direction by varying the electric voltage applied on electrodes in one line in the main scanning direction. Thus, the beam diameter at each position in one line in the main scanning direction on a photoreceptor is varied, for example, only in the main scanning direction, and the beam diameter in one line in the main scanning direction is kept uniform.
