PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner of a multi-room type, reducing refrigerant passing sound in starting the heating operation of a sleep indoor unit in any condition of refrigerant distribution in two gas and liquid layers in an indoor heat exchanger of the sleep indoor unit. SOLUTION: This air conditioner includes: the indoor unit 100 including a compressor 110 and an outdoor heat exchanger 130; a plurality of indoor units 201-203 respectively having an indoor blower 211, an indoor heat exchanger 210 and an indoor expansion valve 212; and an indoor unit control part for monitoring the indoor units 201-203 and controlling the operating condition thereof, wherein the plurality of indoor units 201-203 are connected in parallel to the outdoor unit 100 through a liquid pipe 101 and a gas pipe 102. In a heating operation mode, when the heating operation is started from the state where predetermined indoor units out of the plurality of indoor units stop the heating operation or from the thermo-off state, the expansion valves 212 are set to the substantially maximum opening during a predetermined time after the operation start to thereby take out a liquid refrigerant retaining in the indoor heat exchangers 210 at a time.
