A method of cleaning coating material remaining in a coating material path for supplying coating material to a rotary atomizer head, the cleaning being performed by alternately supplying cleaning air and cleaning liquid, in that order or in the reverse order, to the coating material path. When pigments contained in coating material to be cleaned has high hardness, the cleaning liquid supply time period in which the cleaning liquid is first supplied to the coating material path is set longer (pattern B) than a standard time period (pattern A) or alternately the pressure of cleaning air first supplied to the coating material path is set lower than a standard pressure (pattern C). The pattern B reduces the amount of coating material remaining in the coating material path, and the pattern C reduces the speed of coating material colliding with a center cone. Thus, the patterns B and C reduce abrasion of the center cone with their respective ways.
