The transmission (10) has an interconnecting member (50) that continuously interconnects another interconnecting member (46) of a planetary gear set (18) e.g. planet gear, with third interconnecting member (42) of another planetary gear set (20). Five torque transmitting mechanisms i.e. clutches (26-34), are selectively engaged to interconnect the interconnecting member (42) with the interconnecting member (46), where the mechanisms are engaged in combinations of two to establish eight forward speed ratios and reverse speed ratio between an input member (12) and an output member (22).
