<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a glass material improving the yield of the glass material, to reduce its production cost and easily manufacturing a glass material having less fluctuationΔn in refractive index and a large diameter. <P>SOLUTION: A quartz glass rod 1 is inserted into a quartz pipe 3 and a glass material preform 5 in which both members are kept in a close contact state each other is formed by shrinking the quartz pipe 3 under a high temperature.
