The transmission (10) has an interconnecting member (42) continuously interconnecting planet gear carriers (14B) of a planetary gear set with ring gears (14A). Torque transmitting mechanisms (26, 28, 30, 32) engageable to interconnect one sun gear (20C), carriers and ring gears with another sun gear, another set of carriers and ring gears and a stationary element i.e. transmission housing. The mechanisms are engageable in combinations of two to establish eight forward speed ratios and reverse speed ratio between input and output members.
