PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid state imaging apparatus which can image the vertically long image and the horizontally long image having the same screen size and pixel density and difficult to be imaged up by a conventional imaging apparatus efficiently while switching easily without turning the imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: In the solid state imaging element where a light receiving region 111 having a plurality of photoelectric converting portions 113 arranged two-dimensionally, vertically and horizontally, and a charge transfer register for receiving signal charges from the photoelectric converting portions 113 and transferring the signal charges are formed on a semiconductor substrate and outputting image data based on the signal charges, the width of the light receiving region 111 where the photoelectric converting portions 113 are arranged is substantially equalized in the vertical and horizontal directions on the plane of the semiconductor substrate.
