PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator system capable of ensuring an elevating travel of a car or a counterweight, without impairing the freedom in the shape of the counterweight and article layout in a hoistway. SOLUTION: The elevator system comprises the car 2 elevating in the hoistway 7, a wire rope 3 coupled to the car 2 at one end, the counterweight 4 coupled to the other end of the wire rope 3 and elevating with the car 2, a hoist machine 5 feeding the wire rope to elevate the car 2 and the counterweight 4, and a wire rope adjusting mechanism 6 winding up or extending the wire rope 3.
