PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication system which controls communication complexity and ensures efficient authentication in subgroups of a group. SOLUTION: Terminal devices 111 (U[1], ..., U[t], ..., U[m]) disclose public keys Y[1], ..., Y[t], ..., Y[m] respectively. A representative 701 of a group of terminals 131 generates a seed R to transmit it to an authentication device 121, and then the authentication device 121 generates a challenge b to transmit it to the group of terminals 131. The terminal devices 111 (U[1], ..., U[t]) in the group of terminals 131 generate responses d[0], ..., d[m] using secret keys W[1], ..., W[t], and then transmit them to the authentication device 121. The authentication device 121 refers to the seed R, the public keys Y[1], ..., Y[t], ..., Y[m], and the challenge b, and then performs anonymous group authentication for the group of terminals 131.
