<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an abnormality in a toner supply device from being erroneously detected upon a recovery operation after detecting that the toner cartridge is in a toner-empty state, and to shorten a user's waiting time. <P>SOLUTION: Whether or not the toner cartridge 28 is in the toner-empty state is detected. When detecting the toner-empty state, the fact that the toner-empty state is detected is stored. If a printing operation becomes impossible due to causes other than the detection of the toner-empty state, upon the following recovery operation to eliminate the cause, the recovery operation is judged as a first recovery operation to estimate that the toner cartridge 28 is attached before the recovery operation or a second recovery operation to estimate that the toner cartridge 28 is not attached. When the recovery operation is judged as the first recovery operation, an operation to supply the toner from the toner cartridge 28 to a developing housing 22 is performed.
