<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a gear shift level appropriate to the intention of an operator, for example, whether or not the operator wants power source brake, as an initial gear shift level when the operator selects a manual gear shift mode. <P>SOLUTION: When a shift lever 72 is moved to a "S" position to select a S mode, it is determined whether the gear mode is changed or the manual gear shift mode is directly selected according to whether or not the shift lever 72 stays in a "D" position for a predetermined time or more (step S2). The initial gear shift levels of the S mode are determined separately when the gear shift mode is changed (decision at step S2 is YES) and when the manual gear shift mode is directly selected (decision at step S2 is NO).
