PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable power optical system capable of allowing more corrections of various aberrations such as a spherical aberration, color aberration, and astigmatism than background technologies despite a compact design, and to provide an imaging apparatus, and a digital device. SOLUTION: The variable optical system includes, in order from the object side to the image side, a first lens group 11 of negative optical power, a second lens group 12 of positive optical power, and a third lens group 14 of negative optical power. For varying power from the wide-angle end to the telephoto end, the first lens group 11 and the second lens group 12 move so as to decrease an interval between them. The first lens group 11 is composed of one negative lens. The second lens group 12 includes at least one positive lens and at least one negative lens. If the height of the principal light ray of a luminous flux corresponding to the height of the maximum image on the lens face of the second lens group 12, whose lens face is closest to an object, at the wide-angle end is Hg2 and if the maximum effective radius of this lens face is Rg2, the variable power optical system satisfies ¾Hg2¾/Rg2>0.15.
