PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable compression ratio internal combustion engine in which the compression ratio is properly controlled according to the operating conditions by smoothly performing the relative movement of a cylinder block and a crankcase. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine 1 comprises the cylinder block 2, a cylinder head 3, the crankcase 4, and a moving mechanism 5. In the internal combustion engine 1, the compression ratio can be changed by moving the cylinder block 2, the cylinder head 3, and the crankcase 4 relative to each other by the moving mechanism 5.
