The device (10) has actuating devices (20,22,24) for indicating direction of travel and a steering angle sensor (18). A central on-board computer (12) is provided for evaluating sensor data from the steering angle sensor and signals of other sensors and for controlling various vehicle components such as illumination devices. The central on-board computer processes signal data from the actuation devices for indicating direction of travel and controls photometric direction indicating devices (26,28) of vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for activation and deactivation of the direction indicator in a motor vehicle.
