PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the controllability of a valve timing from being lowered by the deviation of the responsive characteristic of a variable valve timing device. SOLUTION: When a valve timing is held, a hold dead zone in which the change rate of the valve timing is small even if a duty value as an operating signal of the variable valve timing device is slightly changed is produced. The hold dead zone is enlarged and individual difference is elicited as the temperature is lowered. When the valve timing is held, the amount of the displacement of the responsive characteristic of the valve timing is learned according to the change rate of the valve timing when the duty value D is slightly changed from within the hold dead zone to the outside of that zone.
