PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device that executes vertical transfer by the same vertical transfer drive regardless of a photographing mode and obtains a good-quality image with less dark current in a high-sensitivity photographing mode, and its driving method. SOLUTION: During the drive of an image pickup device, the following drive control is executed. A potential well is formed in a vertical transfer path 22 for each of a plurality of photoelectric conversion parts 21. Signal charges accumulated in each of the plurality of photoelectric conversion parts 21 are read into each potential well. Each potential well reading the signal charges is successively moved in a column direction and the signal charges are transferred to a horizontal transfer path 22. The signal charges are moved in a row direction of the horizontal transfer path 22 so as to transfer them to an output part 24. Here, when transferring the signal charges via the horizontal transfer path 22, the capacity of each potential well of the vertical transfer path 21 is reduced, compared with the case when not transferring the signal charges via the horizontal transfer path.
