<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light irradiation device that can change a light irradiation direction by using a liquid crystal cell by deflecting two polarization components whose deflection directions are orthogonal to each other. <P>SOLUTION: The light irradiation device includes a laminated structure of first and second light deflection liquid crystal cells. The first light deflection crystal cell includes a prism layer being in contact with a liquid crystal layer, and an alignment structure for controlling a major axis direction of liquid crystal molecules in an interface between the liquid crystal layer and the prism layer to a first direction. The second light deflection liquid crystal cell includes a prism layer being in contact with a liquid crystal layer, and an alignment structure for controlling a major axis direction of liquid crystal molecules in an interface between the liquid crystal layer and the prism layer to a second direction. The second direction is chosen such that, when, among light rays passing through the first light deflection liquid crystal cell, a polarization component whose vibration direction of an electric vector is orthogonal to the first direction reaches the interface between the liquid crystal layer and prism layer of the second light deflection liquid crystal cell, a vibration direction of an electric vector of the polarization component is parallel to the second direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
