PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that the resolution of a microscopic optical system does not always agree with the resolution of an imaging device in the conventional manner, whereby image quality of an observation image is deteriorated because the optical performance of the microscopic optical system can not be fully utilized, or readout time gets long by performing needless readout of pixels. SOLUTION: The microscopic image pickup apparatus is equipped with: the imaging device comprising the pixels arranged in a two-dimensional matrix state and converting light with which an image is formed by the microscopic optical system into an image signal; an enlargement and reduction control part reading out the image signal of the desired pixel from the imaging device; a camera processing part converting the image signal read out from the imaging device by the enlargement and reduction control part into digital image data; and a display part displaying the observation image processed by the camera processing part. The microscopic image pickup apparatus is provided with a matching adjustment part varying the resolution of the observation image read out from the imaging device by the enlargement and reduction control part according to the optical resolution of the microscopic optical system.
