PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a transparent M:Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>sintered compact applicable to a solid laser. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the transparent M:Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>sintered compact (M is element of at least one selected from a group consisting of Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni) comprises: a step for preparing a starting solution comprising Y(NO<SB>3</SB>)<SB>3</SB>and a nitrate of M (M is a selected element); a step for adding an NH<SB>3</SB>aqueous solution into the starting solution; a step for further adding (NH<SB>4</SB>)<SB>2</SB>SO<SB>4</SB>into the reaction solution obtained in the previous step; a step for calcining the powder obtained from the reaction solution; a step for forming the calcined powder; and a step for sintering the formed powder.
