An apparatus for facilitating voice communication between persons outside 120 an aircraft and persons 122 inside an aircraft comprising an internal (figure 2) and an external (figure 1) communications unit, the units comprising a voice sensing means (eg. microphone) 100, voice receiving and transmitting means, and voice amplifying means (eg., speaker / headphones) 102. Preferably the external audio communication apparatus 126 has means to remotely control an aircraft by operating a self-propelled nose wheel of the aircraft. In this way, speed and direction of the aircraft can be controlled when it is taxiing on the ground. The aircraft direction is preferably controlled by an arm / joystick 132 and speed controlled by a slider 130 attached to the voice communication apparatus. The external transponder / control unit is ideally a wireless handheld portable unit, but may alternatively be fixed airport equipment in the control tower. The in-aircraft control unit may be free-standing or built-in. |
